Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) was established in 1971 as the statutory body vested with the responsibility of standardizing and regulating the quality of all products in Nigeria. Its function anchors on investigating the quality of facilities, materials and products in Nigeria, and instituting a quality assurance system for the certification of factories, products and laboratories.

In the year 2015,the SON Act No. 14, 2015 was instituted to replace that of 1971. This joins forces with the Cap 59 laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004. The SON Act No. 14, 2015 encapsulates the Standards Organization of Nigeria Act. These two instruments help in strengthening and providing additional functions for the organization and also increasing penalty for violation, and for related matters.

The aims and objectives of the SON include:

  1. Assistance in the production of quality goods;
  2. Certification of industrial products;
  3. Improvement of measurement accuracy and circulation of information relating to standards.
  4. Preparation of standards relating to products, measurements, materials and processes among others, and their promotion at the national, regional and international levels
