University of Uyo: Location, Courses, Admission and Accommodation, Cut-of-marks and Fees

The University of Uyo popularly known as UNIUYO was established in 1991 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Before the commencing of the university in 1991, it was known to be the University of Cross River which was created in 1983, as the state was part of the old cross river state.

The University operates a multi-campus system with its campus located at strategic sites in the state, they include, the Main Campus, the Town Campus, the Annex Campus, the College of Health Sciences Campus and the Ime Umanah Campus.
The University of Uyo has a broad fields of study and currently boasts of having about 13 faculties offering degree programmes in diverse fields leading to officially recognized degrees such as bachelor, masters and postgraduate degrees.
The University of Uyo has her quality of education which is being instilled by it staffs to students. The university is competing favourably with most top rated Universities in the country and currently stands as the 21st best institution in the country.

How It Started

The university was integrated from the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS). The federal government of Nigeria on October 1, 1991 established it as a federal university and the name was changed to the University of Uyo. The university inherited students, staff, academic programmes and the entire facilities of the erstwhile University of Cross River State established by the then Cross River State that comprised of the present Akwa Ibom and Cross River State in 1983.
Academic activities in the university kick-start during the 1991/92 academic session. University of Uyo at present has about 12
faculties, the postgraduate school and the school of continuing Education.
Professor Enefiok Essien is the current Vice-Chancellor of the university with the Emir of Hadejia, Adamu Maje as the chancellor.

The University of Uyo is located in the heart of Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, Nigeria’s second largest oil-producing state. Uyo is easily accessible by road,although there is an international airport for external use(s). The university operates from four campuses:

  • The Permanent Site/Main Campus of the university is situated along Nwaniba Road, Uyo and is about 4.5 km from the city centre and covers an area of about 1,443 hectares.
    The Main Campus accommodates Parts of Central Administration, Faculties of Engineering and Natural and Applied Sciences, International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEESR), and the Postgraduate Schools.
  • The Town Campus is located in a location not far from the main site still in Uyo. It accommodates Faculties of Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Pharmacy.
  • The Annex Campus of the university homes the Faculties of Agriculture, Business Administration, Law, Environmental Studies and General Studies.
  • The Ime Umana Campus, is situated in Ediene Abak, a town very close to Uyo. The campus accommodates the Pre-Degree, JUPEB and other special courses offered by the school.

University of Uyo Admission Requirements

Undergraduates

Candidates are normally admitted into the university through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), by Direct Entry or through the pre-degree programme for entry into any of the degree programmes of the University. Freshers(100 level):

  • Candidates seeking admission into the University of Uyo must have credit passes in at least five (5) SSCE/NECO/ O’level subjects including English, Mathematics and three other relevant subjects at no more than two sittings.
  • You are also required to register, sit for and attain the prescribed JAMB cut-off mark for your preferred course. Then you can be eligible to write the entrance examination (Post-UTME).

200 level (Direct entry):

In addition to having the above requirements, candidates will also be required to;

  • Have a National Diploma, which should come from a recognized institution in Nigeria.
  • Applicants may also be required to have a Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in a subject(s) related to the proposed field of study with a minimum of one unit and two (2) passes.
  • You may also be admitted if you have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution.

Admission Requirements For Postgraduates

The PG school at UNIUYO runs 94 PhD and 108 Masters programmes spread across the faculties of the University; in addition to a number of Diploma programmes administered at the School of Continuing Education.

Admission Requirements For Master’s Degree

  • Candidates aspiring for the University of Uyo masters degree programmes, must have a first degree in the preferred course of study a relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from the university or a recognized university.

Admission Requirements For PhD In UNIUYO

  • Prospective applicants must have a master’s degree in the preferred course with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 point scale or an average of 60% from the University or one recognized by the school.
  • It’s also important to note that you may be required to sit for a screening examination and an oral interview organize by the PG school.
