The University of Calabar (UNICAL) – is a university situated in Calabar, Cross River State, south-southern Nigeria. It is located at Leopad Town, Etagbor, Calabar.

The University of Calabar is fondly called ‘UNICAL’ by students, staffs and other users due to it’s flexibility from ‘University of Calabar’.

UNICAL is one of Nigeria’s second generation federal universities and currently has a graduate school, ten Faculties, and three Institutes to its name.
The school is poised in giving sound academic training aimed at laying a broad undergraduate foundation upon which further intellectual and professional pursuits can be based at the Graduate school level. Hence, the University offers accredited programmes or courses leading to officially recognized degrees such as bachelors, masters and
postgraduate degrees in several disciplines.
The University of Calabar is currently ranked as the 48th best University in Nigeria.

How It Started

The University was established in 1975 by the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. Initially before pronouncing a separate university, it was a Calabar campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, but ceased to be a campus the effect by the Federal government.

Location

The University of Calabar is located in the heart of Calabar, precisely in Etagbor, the capital of Cross River state. Calabar is a good site for an institution of this kind. The city is widely know for its tourists centres and attraction.
Calabar is easily accessible by road, although there is an international airport in the city for external use.

Located in Calabar Municipal, an ancient city with a long tradition of culture and contact with western civilization, the already developed area of the University occupies a 17-hectare site on the eastern side of the town, between the Great Qua River and the Calabar River.
Additional land has been acquired on both sides of the Great Qua River for the development of the University.

The University of Calabar, UNICAL offers programmes for pre-bachelor, bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees. Admission requirements into any of these programmes may differ, based on your preferred course or faculty.

University of Calabar Admission Requirements For Undergraduates

100 level students:

As a prospective candidate, you must have credit passes in at least five (5) SSCE/NECO/ O’level subjects including English, Mathematics and three other relevant subjects at no more than two sittings.

You are also required to register, sit for and attain the prescribed JAMB cut-off mark for your preferred course. Then you can be eligible to write the entrance examination (Post-UTME).

200 level (Direct entry-level students):

In addition to having the above requirements, you may also be required to;
Have a National Diploma, which should come from a recognized institution in Nigeria. Applicants may also be required to have a Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in a subject(s) related to the proposed field of study with a minimum of one unit and two (2) passes.

University of Calabar Admission Requirements For Postgraduate

Diploma (PGD)

Are you a prospective student vying to gain admission into this level? Then you must be a graduate of the University or an Institution recognized by the school with at least a third class degree or a minimum upper credit in the Higher National Diploma (HND).

Admission Requirements For Master’s Degree

Candidates must have a first degree in the preferred course of study a relevant discipline with a CGPA of not less than 3.0 from UNICAL or a recognized university.

Admission Requirements For Ph.D

Prospective applicants must have a master’s degree in the preferred course with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 point scale or an average of 60% from the University or one recognized by the school.

  1. All student who has paid their fees and desire an accommodation space in the hostel should kindly apply online on www.unicalhostels.com . Please ensure to enter your school fees confirmation number correctly during your application.
  2. The list of those whose application have been considered for hostel accommodation will be published concurrently. If your name is on the published list, kindly proceed to GTBank plc or FCMB plc calabar road and obtain your hostel scratch card for N6,850.
  3. Having paid for your accommodation space successfully, get two fill jackets, and write your Name, Matric Number, Phone Number and Department on each file.
    – Also attach passport photograph on each file, with a photocopy of your school fees receipt and evidence fee payment.
  4. Submit your file at the office of the Dean of Student at Student Affairs Division.
