Olubayo Adefemi Club Career

He began his career with Bendel Insurance, before playing for Asaba-based side Delta Force in 2002 after they saw his potentials.

After some outings with domestic clubs, he resorted to find a new environment and was signed by Israeli side Hapoel Jerusalem in 2004. He would have eventually move on to three other sides in Israel, performing admirably, but failing to influence games as was expected of him.

An assured season with Hapoel Bnei Lod led to a contract offer from Rapid Bucharest, three time winners of the Romanian League. Arriving some time after Giuleștenii’s latest league title, and two years after their Uefa Cup quarter- final appearance, Olubayo’s time in Romania was a disaster for the player. A dispute with club hierarchy led to his performances being few and not as he had want.

The next stop was Austria, where SC Rheindorf Altach offered him a contract from the trauma of five months in Bucharest.

He also played for Boulogne and Skoda Xanthi football clubs between 2009 and 2011 where he scored a total of 3 goals for the clubs.

International career

Adefemi was a good compatriot and he represented his country at the 2008 Olympic Games, playing all the games and scoring a goal in a semifinal match against Belgium. The back man with other players of the Nigerian Under 20 Team came second behind North American side Argentina Team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands in which star player Lionel Messi was part of the Argentina team. As a defender, he could not score much and played 5 out of the six matches Nigeria played, scoring 1 goal during play against Morocco in the semi- final.

Adefemi made his Senior National Team debut against Ireland on 29 May 2009. Adefemi made his second senior appearance for his country against France in a game that his side won.


The sad event happened to Olubayo Adefemi on 18 April 2011 as he died in a car accident while driving on Egnatia Odos, near the city of Kavala, Greece on his to picking a flight for Nigeria to finalise his marital issues.
