Mutiu Adepoju, born on 22 December 1970 in the southern Nigerian city of Ibadan is a football player now retired from active football.

He is known for playing mostly as an attacking midfielder. He played for his country Nigerian and several other clubs which most of his play time of his career was in Spain. He stared in the La Liga and made a total of 175 games and 22 goals over the course of seven seasons and mainly representing Racing de Santander and Real Sociedad.

Club career

Adepoju started playing football while young in Nigeria before moving out to join Real Madrid in 1989, but due to the competition for places and not having much potentials then, he never made it past its B-side.
He played his first professional season in the Segunda División making an impressive outing as he scored 11 goals to help Racing de Santander return to La Liga, and he continued to feature and found the net regularly for the Cantabrians as he played for the following three years.

Adepoju in 1996 left for Real Sociedad but, after a good first season with the club, struggled heavily to book a regular place with the Basques.

In 2001–02, he left Spain to represent Saudi Arabia’s Ittihad FC, but quickly returned back where he featured rarely for second level club UD Salamanca. Adepoju struggled for another two more ugly years in Turkey and Cyprus before opting to retire in 2006 in Spain’s lower leagues.

Subsequently, Adepoju after laying down his boots returned to his first team Shooting Stars FC, as chief administrator.

International career

A Nigeria international he was, Adepoju appeared for the country in three World Cups and as many Africa Cup of Nations. He played for the African giant in the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship as a member of the squad.

The midfielder netted a brace against the United States in the semi-finals to help his side advance to the last stage of the competition. The final was against Portugal, which ended in a 0–2 defeat.

Adepoju progressed his games and went on to collect 48 caps for the country, with six goals. He made his first senior appearance against Togo in August 1990, but his breakthrough came during the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations, and he helped his nation win the next edition of competition. Adepoju was part of the squads for the FIFA World Cups in 1994, 1998 – where he scored in a 3–2 win against Spain– and 2002, although he did not play in the latter tournament.
